Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) in London, was raised by her mother, grandmother, and godparents. Her father left her family. Ford suffered from anxiety disorder caused by the word association when she was a child. Ford was attracted to acting in her teenage years and joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford gained entry to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but after just a few days, decided that she was a poor choice for this school. Ford then applied to be a student for the Central School of Speech and Drama and was admitted on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. Shaun Dingwall was later to play regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993 but, by that time she was already making her television debut in an episode from 1991 in the show Surgical Spirit; she adopted the professional name "Catherine Tate". Tate made her television debut in the year 1991, appearing on shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. She worked on stage regularly and was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. But Tate soon began to garner recognition for her stand-up comedic performances that she incorporated into her resume in the year 1996.
